Will the Real Captain Marvel Please Stand Up? A “Shazam!” Review

I’m not gonna lie; I wrote that headline before I even saw Shazam! I don’t even know if they are gonna call him “Captain Marvel” in the movie, and that’s honestly half the reason I want to see it, just to see how they handle the elephant in the room- especially since Shazam! is coming out just less than a month after Captain Marvel.

As I’m writing this introduction, I’ve still got several hours before I actually see the flick, and I won’t lie, I’m just a hair apprehensive. Not because the movie looks bad- in fact, it actually looks very good- but because of the other elephant in the room: DC.

I’m not one to knock a film before I’ve seen it. After all, how can you properly judge a movie that you’ve only seen two or three minutes of, out of context? I remember I was adamant that I wouldn’t judge Ben Affleck’s casting as Batman until I saw him on screen, and he didn’t disappoint (at least the first time). And Shazam! has done nothing wrong in it’s marketing to suggest to me that it will be anything less than a good time at the movies.

But for ever DC movie that’s been released, there’s been at least one stinker to follow…
