What Makes Her a Hero? A Captain Marvel Review
We’ve got about a month to go until the highly anticipated Avengers: Endgame finally concludes the battle against Thanos. While we’ve waited- and it has felt like a very long wait- the MCU has been very sparse with it’s entries, only giving us two films to tide us over until the final showdown. Of course, we had the welcome relief of the lighthearted Ant-Man and the Wasp right after the devastating Infinity War, which acted like a palate-cleanser. By all regards, Captain Marvel, then, was to serve not only as an origin story, but as a ramping up to the impending Endgame.
Marvel has also been somewhat sparse in origin stories in Phase 3; in fact, I’d say Captain Marvel is the only true origin story released since Doctor Strange, as both Spider-Man and Black Panther were introduced in Civil War, and both of their first solo outings took place after they’ve been established as the heroes they are.
As origin stories go, Marvel has always been adept at crafting fun films- that’s why we are on the 21st Marvel movie- and Captain Marvel is no exception; in fact, it feels like the most refined origin story that we’ve gotten from the studio. The Marvel formula is real and working, and yet it feels fresh and new with this one.
