My Misadventures with Smart Glasses

A bespectacled review.

Reader, I’ve probably wanted smart glasses ever since I watched Star Trek: The Next Generation. Or maybe since SPYkids. At the very least, I know I’ve wanted them ever since the Doctor whipped out his sonic sunglasses and proclaimed wearable technology to be the new trend (and say what you will, sonic sunglasses are as cool as bowties. And bowties are cool).

I’ve probably wanted them ever since Google announced Google Glass, but unfortunately, those were discontinued way before I would have ever been able to afford them. Alas.

I’ve been interested in wearable technology for a while. I’ve owned several smartwatches and even a fitness ring, and glasses have, for a long time, felt like a natural place for me to add some tech to my person.

Even with the failure of Google Glass, there are a few variations of smart glasses that have piqued my interest in the last couple of years. In fact, the three that I want to talk about today all have the same name: Frames.

Glasses, A History

Me, myself, and my cousin Cam, with my first pair of glasses. Photo by… I don’t remember, but it was a family member. Probably my dad, or my grandmother.
