A Day in the Life of an Essential Employee
Personally, I don’t think of myself as essential; I work for a company where over a thousand other people perform the same or a similar job as I do.
I’m not essential, like the healthcare workers who are literally putting their lives on the line to try to fight this virus. I’m not essential like the employees at grocery stores or restaurants who are trying to keep us fed. I’m not essential like first responders or anything.
But according to my company, I’m essential enough to still have to come to work during a global pandemic. I’m essential enough to risk my health to help others.
I don’t want to downplay what I do, either. While I’m not naming names, I do work somewhere that I can make a difference in someone’s day and help- in my own small way- them deal with the ongoing crisis we all find ourselves in.
But even though I feel there is importance in what I do every day, I find myself wondering more and more if it is worth me risking my health to be there.
I think, if we were in a different climate, and I was at a job where my health was at risk- I’d walk right out the door. But we aren’t in that…
